Here at last, here at lassst

After a long, long, long, journey from Boston to, 9 hours in London Hethrow to the final 8 hour destination of Uganda, I made it.   On the way I swore we were following the Nile River, strait to the numerous ripples of Lake Victoria as we rolled into Entebbe airport.  We met up with my group of Micro-finance and Entrepreneurs as well as the other SIT Kampala group (who we have been spending the orientation week with).
After gathering almost everyone at the airport we took the van ride into Kampala from Entebbe, also my first ever true vision of Uganda that wasn't from a Google search or video.  I will say that it was quite a shock right away.  First and biggest shock of the day was that it was cooler in Uganda than at home in Boston!  I believe it was 60 degrees when we were sitting outside at 5pm.  Today it was somewhere in the 70's, not bad at all.  Next shock was how much of a minority we are.  It's quite funny to be in a huge van of all white people, some of the reactions are quite priceless.  One fun one said to our driver Mona was "Where did you get them?"  They call all white people here "Muznga's",  which is much less a racial comment to be offensive, but more of an observation for them.  As our leaders told us, it is very strange and rare to see white skinned people.
Next shock was the traffic!  The rule for driving is there are no rules.  At an intersection you just go, even if there is no space.  Amazingly enough I don't even feel unsafe in the van because the people here are amazing at it!  Though there is no system at all, it seems like it works well enough.
The food is... well... food.  It's neither good or bad, mostly just plain.  A lot of potatoes, rice, veggies, and this not so good, but filling Plantain mash.  For now the internet is not good enough to send e-mails or pictures, but by some time next week we should be getting our own portable modems where we can access much quicker internet.  Until then, lets hope this sends!  Much love to all reading this xoxo
